A sense of humor and the ability to respond creatively and diplomatically to the challenge of working with the Art Center’s wide variety of instructors and students is also important. Punctuality and reliability are essential as this position is responsible for opening and closing procedures. Now in the 72th year, the Richmond Art Center is one of the most exciting and innovative community-based art organizations in California. The Center’s 25,000-square-foot facility, located in Richmond’s Civic Center Plaza, houses four large gallery spaces and six well-equipped studios arranged around a sculpture courtyard. Programs include exhibitions which emphasize the work of emerging to mid-career Bay Area artists; on-site arts and crafts classes for over 1,600 youth and adults each year; and art activities at inner-city schools and community centers for over 5,000 youth annually. RAC, a private, non-profit corporation governed by a volunteer board of directors, is managed by an eight person staff and has a faculty of professional artists.
Requirements: Experience with a variety of ceramics equipment, including gas reduction firing to cone ten. Good comprehension and experience of ceramic processes and studio maintenance. Must demonstrate strong personal skills in assisting students and instructors. Knowledge of computerized electric kiln highly desired. Knowledge of standard studio safety practices and procedures a must. BFA in Ceramics or equivalent studio experience minimum requirement. Reliable transportation and ability to lift 50 lbs. a must. Overview of Organization: The Richmond Art Center, a nationally recognized non-profit visual arts organization, is seeking a responsible, experienced person to fill the position of part-time Ceramic Studio Manager / Technician. The position involves working under the supervision of the On-Site Director of Education as the Richmond Art Center’s primary Ceramics staff member, serving as a communication link between staff, students and volunteers. Responsibilities include loading, firing and unloading electric bisque & low-fire glazes from electric kiln 3 – 5 times weekly. Unload gas kiln, clean shelves, load and fire once each week or as needed. Supervise open studio, studio monitors and volunteers. Prepare or supervise preparation of glazes. Supervise general studio clean up, organization and inventory. Handle minor repairs and maintain studio equipment such as belts, wheel, kilns, and kiln shelves. Oversee and arrange Visiting Ceramics Artist Series and help develop ceramic curriculum. Must attend weekly staff meetings and be available to work art center events as needed including some evenings and weekends
