DROP-IN POLICY: Per day drop-ins are allowed in some adult classes with the consent of the instructor or where noted in the description. Students may drop-in ONLY 3 times before they are required to purchase a half or full class (no other fractional classes allowed), unless otherwise noted.

You can do it! Learn to use the potter's wheel to make mugs, bowls, plates and more. Fundamentals of glazing and design problems unique to ceramics will be covered. Experienced potters will sharpen their skills and explore larger, more difficult forms. Please wear tennis shoes and bring a small towel.

figure sculpture     

Instructor: Phoebe Ackley   

This class is all about the figure. The focus will be anatomy and the expressiveness of the pose. From there we will fine tune and jump off into any personal direction the clay and your hands may want to go. This could include bust/portrait, bas-relief or abstracting from the realist rendition. Three sessions with a model. Amazing alternatives to glaze finishing will be demonstrated.

wheel-throwing & hand-building

Geared toward the intermediate/advanced potter, this class will cover techniques for creating vases, cups, bowls and platters. Focus will be on altering wheel-thrown forms, high-temperature glazing and throwing tall cylinders of up to 25 lbs. Maximum 15 students.

what makes a glaze

Instructor: Chic Lotz

Learn what makes a glaze at any firing temperature and how to alter or design your own. Chic Lotz organized a color-coded chart that shows how varying the ratios of 3 major glaze components affects stability, color, firing temperature, glaze fit and glaze surface. Learn to “analyze” a glaze recipe, the function of each ingredient, and which ingredients can be substituted for others. Find out the difference between recipe %, the weight %, and the Unity Molecular Formula. alternative glaze application

Discover the beauty and ease of non-ceramic finish techniques that will enhance your clay piece. Demonstrations of different options given and materials will be discussed. A selection of surface treatment samples will be available as reference. Create your own combination. The instructor will also demonstrate how to repair broken pieces. Non-ceramic finish is perfect for ceramic work that has been glued. Bring at least one bisqued piece to work on.

clay surfaces: depth, design and imagery

This workshop will explore three-dimensional forms in clay and surface treatments using low-fire materials. A painterly approach to developing surfaces will be encouraged. Methods that create depth, design and imagery will be explored through texture, brush marks, resist methods, and transfer techniques. $5 Materials fee due to instructor at first meeting.

action hand building: narrative sculpture with animals  

Instructor: Jeff Downing

Jeff Downing will demonstrate various approaches to making narrative sculpture using leather hard slabs and sections of moist clay. The focus will be on working at a quick pace to create exciting forms with personality and character. Students will be encouraged to create their own stories using various hand building techniques. Jeff will be demonstrating the making of various animal forms in narrative situations using memory and imagination as a reference. Students can make any animals or other imagery of their choice and may use drawings or photos to work from. Composition, form, and technical solutions will be discussed throughout the day. Includes bisque firing. Glazing not included. Maximum 10 people.

Create vibrant monotype prints using only potters clays and pure pigments with this unique and innovative process. Make a clay slab and build up several layers of colored slips and pull multiple prints. $30 Materials fee includes reusable plywood board. Hand tools only. Supply list.

Do you like instant gratification? If so, then this Raku intensive is for you. In this hands on workshop bring your already bisqued ware (fired once but not glazed) and glaze and fire it with fabulous results. Experiment with different techniques including horse hair. Optional potluck both days.
