radical jewelry makeover

Radical Jewelry Makeover (RJM) is a traveling "community mining and recycling" project designed by Ethical Metalsmiths to connect locally sourced jewelry and its donors with skilled makers as a creative, collaborative and sustainable alternative to jewelry made from newly mined metals & gemstones.

RJM is coming to San Francisco and the Richmond Art Center is pleased to be participating along with California College of Art, The Academy of Art University, City College, The Crucible, Revere Academy and Scintillant. Each institution will be hosting maker volunteers as they transform donations from the SF community into new work.

All of the finished "makeover" jewelry will be exhibited and for sale at Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco from October 22 - November 9. There will be a reception on October 24. www.velvetdavinci.com

Proceeds benefit Ethical Metalsmiths efforts to continue RJM and its work on connecting people to responsibly sourced metals and gemstones.

Donations may be dropped off from August 11 to September 11, 2008 at all locations below (except the Richmond Art Center). No walk in drop offs will be accepted at RAC. Donations can be mailed to the RAC, 2540 Barrett Avenue, Richmond, CA 94804. Please include a donation form. Go to www.ethicalmetalsmiths.org/RJM.html to download a form.

Voucher credits will be issued for donations and are good towards the purchase of jewelry makeover pieces on view at Velvet da Vinci Gallery. Voucher credit amounts start at $5 and go up to $50 depending upon the monetary value of individual donations.

Participation is open to continuing RAC jewelry students. Orientation is mandatory and begins on Tuesday September 23 at 10 am. Studio time will be available through Sunday, the 28th. If the jewelry studio is unavailable due to the renovation another classroom will be ready and adapted.
