DROP-IN POLICY: Per day drop-ins are allowed in some adult classes with the consent of the instructor or where noted in the description. Students may drop-in ONLY 3 times before they are required to purchase a half or full class (no other fractional classes allowed), unless otherwise noted.
Please Note: Jewelry course fees include a $10 lab fee, but do not include tools and materials, which vary by class.

Learn basic jewelry-making skills by creating rings, earrings and pendants. We will explore traditional techniques: sawing, soldering, forming, texturing, finishing and stone setting. Students will purchase their own metal, materials and certain tools. All students must attend the first class.

Chasing and repousse is an ancient technique used to achieve both depth and dimension between the foreground and background of metal forms. Students will begin with shaping their own set of chasing tools that will be hardened and tempered. Students will use and test their tools on basic samples and individual projects. Materials fee paid to instructor as projects proceed.

Combine alternative materials and techniques with metal. A series of mini workshops investigates the use of found, recycled and reclaimed objects including resin, paper, wood and fiber. Hand sawing, joinery focused on cold connections, soldering, fabrication, and surface treatment covered. Advanced students continue ongoing projects. All levels welcome. $25 materials fee is due to instructor.

Enameling is the process of fusing glass to metal. It has a long and rich history, from the ancient Egyptians through Lalique and Faberge to the recent explosion of techniques from modern masters. We will cover the basics: preparing the metal, applying the enamel, various types of patterning, firing and finishing. We will explore advanced topics based on class interest. $15 Materials fee due to instructor.

jewelry, stone setting & lapidary

This class will emphasize traditional assembly techniques and design. Explore lapidary, the process of transforming a rough stone into a finished gemstone, and fabricate traditional jewelry using small side-stones. We will cover wire, tube and prong mounting, diamond setting, pav and stone cutting. Prerequisite: basic fabricating skills (soldering, filing, shaping and metal finishing).

Create your own silver jewelry with a medium that is easy to use and rich in possibilities. PMC is pure silver that comes in the form of clay, is worked with like clay and, when fired in a kiln, becomes fine silver. Students who have completed at least one jewelry class at the Richmond Art Center and are currently enrolled in classes W1J – W8J (day drop-in students excluded) are entitled to 3 hours of additional studio time each week during scheduled Supervised Open Studio hours. Students may use the studio only when safety supervision is provided and must sign in upon arrival at the studio.

Alison Antelman
Discover the hydraulic press and create original dies, embossed plates and more with the leverage of 20 tons. Make an acrylic matrix die cut from your design and experiment with the press, including soldering two matrix die halves together to create a hollow form. Explore roller printing, fold formed and textured surfaces. Emboss and imprint metal with a variety of shapes including found steel objects. Basic fabrication and soldering skills useful. Keep shape ideas 2x2 or smaller. Materials list. Bring a lunch.

fold forming

Learn a new approach to forming metal. Fold forming is a method of manipulating metal that takes advantage of the inherent characteristics of the metal itself. Work with the metal instead of imposing your will on it. Complicated organic 3-D forms can be produced very rapidly. Previous metalworking experience useful, but not required. $10 materials fee due to instructor. Bring a bag lunch.
