All weaving classes share a 16-shaft AVL loom for sampling and drafting practice.

DROP-IN POLICY: Per day drop-ins are allowed in some adult classes with the consent of the instructor or where noted in the description. Students may drop-in ONLY 3 times before they are required to purchase a half or full class (no other fractional classes allowed), unless otherwise noted.

afternoon weaving – all levels

Instructor: Stacy Speyer  

Join this class of beginning and experienced weavers for individual attention planning and designing a woven project. Weekly discussions and critiques. We added MAC and PC drafting programs to assist designing on our looms with 4 to 16 shafts. Those interested in dyeing work with the free dyeing method, where threads are set out on a table as a blank canvas to be painted with dye.

evening weaving – all levels

Instructor: Stacy Speyer  

Simple or complex, colorful or neutral, smooth or textured; students will find their own balance of elements. Students may elect to pursue individual projects. Beginners will learn the fundamentals of weaving. Those interested in dyeing will work with the method known as free dyeing, in which the threads are set out on a table and become a blank canvas to be painted with dye.

tablet weaving

Tablet weaving, also known as card weaving, is an ancient Old World technique. It is done without a loom, is portable, and affordable. The possibilities for artistic expression are inexhaustible, and can encompass a wide range of materials--from cotton and silk, to wire and beads. Come and experience some playful contemporary applications including belts, camera or guitar straps, small bags, bracelets, or headbands. Leave with a project set up and endless ideas to explore. A $15 materials fee is due to instructor at first class. Materials list available.

rug braiding     

Instructor: Arlene Magarian

Learn the traditional craft of rug making using recycled materials. Make useful & decorative objects such as rugs, pet beds, bowls and more. Experimentation with color, texture and form encouraged. $10 materials fee to instructor covers all materials but students can bring fabric if desired. Beginners and teens welcome.

hand-felted scarves    

Instructor: Gabriel Russo

Learn how to hand-felt your own gorgeous scarf using beautifully dyed fine wool from Australia, and a technique called Nuno. Participants go through the process from beginning to end, which includes choosing wool, laying it out on silk chiffon, and repeated agitation with soap and water. The fabric is then left to dry and can be further manipulated. The result is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind scarf. $35 materials fee due to instructor at start of workshop. Beginners welcome, and suitable for anyone 18 and up!

weaver tour in Pt. Reyes Station    

Instructor: Jan Langdon

Visit two local weavers in their studios and several boutiques that feature handmade textiles in the charming artist community of Point Reyes Station. The tour begins at the home studio of Jan Langdon where she creates one-of-a-kind pieces. Jan has taught weaving for more than 20 years and is currently at the Richmond Art Center. Next visit Susan Hayes down the road in her production studio and see how her production hand weaving becomes clothing she sells. Susan has been weaving and working from Pt. Reyes since 1982. Her career has included the national show circuit. www.susanhayeshandwovens.com Bring or buy lunch with the weavers at Tomales Bay Foods or the  Bovine Bakery. After lunch visit Susan’s retail shop in the Tomales Bay Food Barn and then finish with the co-op style “Black Mountain Artisans" & the ethnic collections of Zuma, which features an ever changing ethnic collection of textiles. Possible car pool from RAC. 1 hour drive time. Directions given when you register. 10 maximum.
